Dreams are Slippery

You know how it is some mornings: minutes before waking, you find yourself in a vivid dream. The phone rings and you answer it. On the line is an agent who has just read the first three chapters of your book. She loves your work and would like to represent you. She promises to email her agency’s contract right away. Just as you catch your breath and begin to give her your email address, the alarm clock beeps loudly in your ear.

Your senses adjust to your bedroom—the early morning light, the soft fabric of your bedding. You remember what’s on your schedule for the day—the meetings at work, your children’s afterschool activities. You sit up and shake off the night’s sleep. And that delicious dream of publishing slips away.

In the past month, how many times have you allowed the demands of your life crowd out your dreams of book publishing? If it’s more than 5 times out of 10, you’re probably wondering if those dreams will ever come true.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
