The Path to Publishing Tutorial

Have you dreamed of seeing your name on the cover of a book? Many people aspire to write a book because they have the creativity, professional expertise, or life experience that will entertain or assist others. Unfortunately, getting published often feels like a labyrinth. You feel alone, as though you have to summon all of the courage, skill, and direction by yourself.

You’ve tried everything—reading books and blogs, talking to other writers, entering literary contests, asking authors to review your work, and sending your manuscript to publishers with hope and a prayer that someone somewhere will discover you for the writer you are. None of it works.

Or, maybe you haven’t tried at all yet.

Please understand that the publishing industry operates in a specific way. If you’re in a hurry to get your book into the world, or simply unaware of industry etiquette and appropriate channels for submissions, your manuscript may never land in the hands of an interested publisher.

To publish a book, you need to know how agents and publishers evaluate new book ideas. Fiction—novels and short story collections—requires a finished manuscript. Nonfiction books—memoirs, history, biography, how-to, self-help, psychology, spirituality, and others—are not finished when they’re sent to agents and publishers. Instead, nonfiction is evaluated by book proposal and sample chapters.

Ninety percent of all nonfiction books are sold to publishers with only a proposal.

Since publishing my first nonfiction book in 2003, I’ve worked with many aspiring authors. I developed The Path to Publishing: Book Proposal Tutorial and Questionnaire because I’ve often wished writers had come to me before finishing a full manuscript, to save them time and heartache when they learn what publishers really want—a ten to fifteen-page book proposal.

  • Offer encouragement and advice based on my own experience, and the experiences of other nonfiction writers like you;
  • Provide you with industry information that brings greater ease in the submission process.

The Path to Publishing will address, in detail, all essential elements of a book proposal, including:

  • Overview
  • Competition
  • Market
  • Publicity
  • Bio
  • Chapter Outline
  • Date of Delivery and Length
  • Title
  • Sample Chapters

Plus, I’ve included a copy of my original proposal for The Mother’s Book of Well-Being to serve as a model for your own proposal writing.

I knew very little about getting a book published until I read Lisa’s guide.  It was easy to follow and completely changed the way I went about writing. . . .  The entire process clarified my thinking and gave me a structure to create with.  I found it phenomenally helpful and instructive.  It was very simple and easy to follow the guide’s steps and directions.  LOVED IT!
